Attachment to Parents and Childhood Trauma in Adolescent Patients With Non-Suicidal Self-Injurious Behaviour

Aims To explore the phenomenon of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in adolescent patients and to assess adolescent-parent attachment childhood trauma relation NSSI behaviour through a case control comparison between adolescents with without NSSI. Methods group included 30 presenting psychiatry outpatient clinic history Controls were non-psychiatric recruited from other specialties clinics. Tools applied were: Semi-structured Psychiatric Interview, Structured Clinical Interview for Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM IV-TR) Axis I II Disorders (SCID-I II), Brief Non-Suicidal Self-Injury Assessment tool (BNSSI-AT), Inventory Parent Peer Attachment (IPPA)-Parent form, Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI) Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ). Patient-rated tools translated into Arabic language. Results Self-cutting was primary method 86.7% followed by interference wound healing 73.3%. Of group, 60% met criteria diagnosis borderline personality disorder (BPD) while 16.7% showed only traits. Moreover, 40% diagnosed depressive disorders. While 93.3% used deal anger, 80% it cope uncomfortable feelings or relieve stress pressure. In addition, 73.3% reported self-injuring because their self-hatred. The main motivation initial negative such as being upset (90%), angry at oneself (73.3%) someone else (53.3%). Also, 36.7% seeing media reading about motivations found related peer scored significantly lower than controls parents (particularly mothers). A positive correlation perceived parental care (mainly trust communication). statistically significant difference both groups regarding severity experiences. emotional neglect 80%, abuse 63.3%, sexual 50% physical 46.7%. Perceived positively correlated sense alienation fathers negatively mothers. Conclusion Females constituted primarily BPD. most common “self-cutting”. high percentage described insecure. majority relationship “affectionless control”. security attachment. also suggest that different types child maltreatment might predict later
